Defining the Machine
Imagine you're looking at a slot cabinet from the inside. You've got the reel mechanism, the payout head, the control logic. In a polarized range, you're running one program: if this combination hits, payout. If not, house keeps the money. No gray area.
In a merged range, you've got overlay. Multiple winning positions. Partial payouts. Combinations that trigger different lights.
Pokerwise, a polarized range is when you're playing extreme hands only. You have either the nuts or air. You bet the strong hands, you bet the complete bluffs. Everything in the middle gets discarded before you get to the table.
A merged range is when you're playing the full spectrum. You have premium hands, medium hands, weak hands, air. You're betting hands that are mediocre because the situation demands it, even though they're not great.
The Practical Hardware
Take a simple situation. You raise from the button. The big blind three-bets you. Now you decide what hands to continue with.
Polarized approach: call with AA-JJ (premium pairs) and Q10 (specific bluff-catching values). Fold everything else. Your range is extreme on both ends.
Merged approach: call with AA-JJ, call with 55-99, call with AK, AQ, fold weaker hands but don't punish yourself by folding too tight. You've got a smoother distribution.
Why This Matters
The three-bettor has their own range problem. If you only ever call with premium hands or specific hands designed to flop well against them, they can adjust. They can bet harder, narrower, more exploitative.
If you call with a merged range, you create problems for them. You're harder to play against because they don't know if you're strong, medium, or weak. Your range contains hands at all equity levels. The overlap makes them think harder.
Modern poker solvers run merged ranges because solvers don't have ego. They don't care if they're calling with 76 offsuit alongside AA. If the math says call, they call. And historically, the math says merged ranges create better expected value across a large sample because your opponent can't pattern-match as efficiently.
The Cost
Polarized ranges are psychologically easier. You know what you're doing with each hand. You're either slow-playing a monster or running a steal. No confusion.
Merged ranges require you to play marginal hands from all positions and at all decision points. That means you're going to win some marginal hands and lose some marginal hands at higher frequency. The variance gets uglier.
You also have to defend wider, which means betting lighter on average across your range. That can feel like you're leaving money on the table in the moment, even when the math is working in your favor.
Current State
Most winning poker pros at limit games and medium-to-high stakes have moved toward merged ranges because solvers taught us that pure polarization is exploitable. But at lower stakes, where exploitative play is more valuable than theoretical correctness, you still see pure polarized ranges because they're easier to execute and humans aren't solving for GTO.
The cabinet is running either a simple program or a complex one. Both work. The simple program is easier to maintain. The complex program, if maintained correctly, produces better results. The operator has to decide which they can actually execute without it breaking down.
