Where the numbers on Gamble-24 come from, and how the book board turns what each book lists into a score out of 10.

What goes on the slate

Slate reads come from the ESPN scoreboard and standings feed. They rotate between a preview of the day's fixtures, a recap of the last results and a read of the league tables. Where the feed lists a line, the piece quotes that single-book line and what the price implies.

Between slates we post evergreen pieces on the markets listed under Sports and markets. We explain prices. We never tip a result.

How the book board works

A board score is the weighted sum of 5 criteria, out of 10. Each input is something the book itself lists, so nothing on the board is invented.

Rating 30%
The book's editorial rating out of 5, stretched onto a 10-point scale so small gaps at the top show up.
Slate fit 25%
How much of the book is built for sports betting, read from its type and from its own description.
Punters 15%
The book's player rating out of 5, on the same 10-point stretch as Rating.
Banking 15%
How many ways to pay the book lists, with an extra point when the minimum deposit is 10 or less.
Licensing 15%
The licence the book names, any second licence, and the years it has been trading since its founding year.
  • Green up: half a point or more above the board median on that criterion.
  • Grey: within half a point of the median.
  • Orange down: half a point or more below the median.
